Active in East Clare
Ask around. That's the best advice for almost everything here, whether you're looking for a good walk, a place to swim, or just wondering what's worth doing today. People in the shops, the café, and along the trail are usually happy to point you toward a favourite spot, and that's often how you find the quiet, special places that make this area what it is. Cycling
East Clare is made for eBikes. The back roads here are narrow, well surfaced, and mostly empty, you will hardly ever meet a car. Load a route into Komoot or a similar app and you can plan your own loop through the countryside, past small lakes, old stone walls, and farmland that has looked much the same for generations. With an eBike the hills and the wind don't matter, so it stays enjoyable whatever the terrain or weather. If you don't have your own bike, Lough Derg eBike Tours rent good quality eBikes and can deliver them to you around the lake, with guided or self guided routes available. Walking
The East Clare Way is the main trail through this part of the county, a circular route of around 172km that starts and ends in Killaloe. It crosses the Slieve Bernagh Mountains, drops down into the lakeland around Tulla and Feakle, circles Lough Graney, then climbs again through the Slieve Aughty Mountains before coming back through Scarriff to Killaloe. Most people walk it in stages over about eight days, but there are also shorter signposted loops along the route if you just want an afternoon out. It's marked with yellow arrows, free to use, and open all year.
Swimming
Lough Derg is there for swimming whenever you're ready for it. In summer the lake fills with people cooling off after a day of cycling or walking. What might surprise you is how many locals swim right through the winter too, togs on, no wetsuit, all year round. Killaloe, Mountshannon, and Scarriff all have easy places to get in, and you'll often find a mobile sauna set up at the swimming spots too, a good way to warm up after a cold dip.
